Have you ever been to a training program that was dreadful?  Unfortunately, many of us have.  Common problems can include:

• Information overload
• Inappropriate or insufficient learning activities
• Lots of theory and no practice
• Not enough time
• Learning not relevant to yourself, staff or workplace
• Too simplistic
• Too complex
• Too repetitious
• Unclear, unfocused or straight out confusing

The list of problems can go on and on.  Sadly, the outcome is often the same; many walk away from the experience disillusioned and unable to apply the learning into the workplace.  Staff can be left feeling the burden of the gap in their own capability.  When this happens, everyone loses!  The workplace loses, because staff are not able to do what they and their workplace expected they could due to the training.

Training Triage is a way of checking on the health of a training program, identifying the major problems and identifying the best possible treatments to support the program deliver real results for the workplace.

Training Triage can support workplaces get real results from training.  It can support staff by ensuring training programs address their needs.  It can support managers by making sure staff who take part in training are skilled and ready to apply these skills on the job.  It creates a win for everyone.

This is the first of a series of posts on triaging your training. In the next post, we will talk about some of the problems generated by subject matter experts and entrepreneurs can often fall into this category.   Entrepreneurs are oftentimes highly knowledgeable subject matter experts, but often lack the insight and skills to design and develop effective training programs.  Training Triage, by an experienced learning and development professional can usually alleviate many of the problems they and their clients’ experience.
